Salar Azimi painting on glassfiber with epoxy has come to life in a special way. First of all I didn’t know him before this first time I saw him and the inspiration that came from that made me use a new technique to make this painting.
When I saw Salar appearing as a guest in a show he started to fascinate me. Born in Iran, living in Aardeburg (Zeeland), talking with the slang from the province and noticing his mentality that grew Zeeuws aswell. It was as if I was listening to my father, but than the other way around.
My father who grew up in Breskens, another little village in Zeeland. With his native slang and mentality he went to Iran in the late fiftees, still called Persia at that time.
At some point in this show, Salar makes a slightly rude joke which made me laugh a lot which remembered me so much at my father that I just had to do something with this fascination.
It inspired me to make this painting of him. I delivered it in person to him in Aardenburg.

The process of that leads to this painting is quite special. It’s made with watercolor, Wool and Silk on top of three layers of glassfiber with a layer of watercolor paper between them.
The wool I used is Merino wool combined with Silk. On top of this I poured a layer of epoxy, an artificial resin. This made the surface very firm but next to that, the texture of the wool is still there. Here and there are puddles of resin that looks like puddles of water but isn’t ofcourse. This gives the painting a joyful surface with lots to discover together with the warm colors I used.
