When I was in Lao in ’24, I came across this special paper. It’s been made of the Mulberry tree, a tree that grows easily over there. It’s traditionally made, has inequal parts and this loose border. It is glued on a mat so it stays in its form.
I chose the buddha in the top corner to take you to this spiritual place ‘Luang Prabang’. Monasteries and Monks in their orange wrappings are around you. Working on the temples and collecting food in the morning in the main street. It really is a spiritual place, you can sense this special peace and quiteness around you.
The peacock not quite showing its vanity but embracing the Buddha as a hint.
Lao painting of Buddha and peacock has been made with watercolor and some oil pastel on top. As this paper doesn’t suit the watercolor very best it awakend my creativity to enhance the subject with a different medium as oil pastel.
